Every item in the four setup menus, in the order the clock
shows them. 49 settings across four menus, plus the buttons that work from the
clock face.
Using the buttons
Left keys
Move between items. Top-left goes back, bottom-left goes forward. The
list wraps around.
Right keys
Change the value of the item on screen. Top-right increases, bottom-right
decreases. Values wrap around too.
Hold
Holding a right key repeats after about half a second, then speeds up
once you pass twenty steps — for walking a year or a brightness limit.
Both right
Leaves the menu from anywhere, as does any right key on
Exit.
On exit
The clock shows Saving & exiting and writes the settings to
EEPROM. Nothing is stored until you leave.

1 · Timekeeping
opens with the top-left key
Setting the clock, and everything that decides what time it thinks it is.
The six time-and-date items write straight to the RTC as you change them.
Display format
24-hour or 12-hour time. This also picks the temperature unit — 12-hour
mode shows °F, 24-hour shows °C.
Choices24 hr · 12 hrDefault24 hr
Date format
Order of the fields when the tubes show the date.
ChoicesDD/MM/YY · MM/DD/YYDefaultDD/MM/YY
Set hour
Hour of day. Shown with AM/PM if Display format is 12-hour, but stored as
24-hour either way.
Range0–23
Set minutes
Minutes. Seconds are reset to zero on every press, so you can set the
clock against a time signal.
Range0–59
Set date
Day of the month. The weekday is worked out for you and is what
workdays only alarms use.
Range1–31
Set year
Four-digit year.
Range2026–2099
Set month
Month, shown by name.
RangeJan–Dec
Set time zone
Offset from GMT, applied to time that arrives from GPS or NTP. It has no
effect on a clock you set by hand. Changing it re-syncs as soon as you
leave the menu.
RangeGMT−12:00 to +14:00, in 30-minute stepsDefaultGMT+00:00
Set DST
Daylight saving rule. The clock applies the changeover itself; pick the
region whose dates you follow.
ChoicesOff · USA · EUDefaultOff
Remote sync
Which time sources the automatic hourly sync may use. It runs at five
minutes past the hour. When both are allowed and both are available the
GPS receiver wins — it is local and its timestamp has not been through a
Wi-Fi round trip.
ChoicesOff · GPS only · NTP only · GPS & NTPDefaultOff
Hourly chimes plays
Sound on the hour. The selected chime plays once while you are on this
item, so you can hear what you are picking.
ChoicesOff · Chime #1–#3DefaultOff
Chime start
First hour that may chime.
Range00:00–23:00Default09:00
Chime end
Last hour that may chime, inclusive. Setting the end earlier than the
start gives you a window that runs across midnight.
Range00:00–23:00Default23:00
Exit — save and return to the clock.
2 · Alarm
opens with the bottom-left key
One alarm, with its own volume, tune and colour effect. While an alarm is
ringing, any of the four keys silences it.
Alarm mode
Whether the alarm is armed, and on which days. On on workdays
skips Saturday and Sunday.
ChoicesOff · On · On on workdaysDefaultOff
Alarm hours
Hour the alarm goes off, shown in whichever format the clock is using.
Range0–23Default07
Alarm minutes
Minute the alarm goes off.
Range0–59Default00
Alarm volume plays
Playback level. Every press replays the current melody at the new level,
so you are judging the real thing rather than a number.
Range1–8Default4
Alarm melody plays
Which of the twelve tunes to wake to. It plays once when you land on the
item and again each time you change it, and stops when you scroll away.
RangeMelody 1–12DefaultMelody 1
Alarm duration
How many times the melody repeats before the alarm gives up. It replays
every 30 seconds, so three repeats is about a minute and a half.
Range1–20 repeatsDefault3
Alarm colors preview
Backlight effect while the alarm rings. Random gives each tube
its own colour, Equal moves them together. The tubes show the
effect live while you are on this item.
ChoicesOff · Random · EqualDefaultOff
Exit — save and return to the clock.
3 · Appearance
opens with the top-right key
How the clock looks and when it is lit. Brightness, backlight and the two
animation items all take effect while you are still standing in front of
them.
Brightness live
Tube brightness. Automatic dims the display through the night
instead of holding one level. The ends of the scale are set by Min. and
Max. brightness in menu 4.
Range1–8, then AutomaticDefault6
Update mode preview
How a digit changes to the next one. All six tubes count 0–9 while you
are on this item so you can watch each option.
How the colon tubes behave between seconds. Previewed live.
ChoicesOn/off · Smooth · SlowDefaultOn/off
Refresh mode
Cathode anti-poisoning. At 59 minutes past each hour every tube runs
through all ten digits, which keeps the rarely-used cathodes from clouding
over. Worth leaving on.
ChoicesOn · OffDefaultOn
Backlight mode live
What the RGB LEDs under the tubes do. Normal is one colour
across all six; Gradient runs a two-colour ramp along the row.
ChoicesOff · Normal · GradientDefaultNormal
Backlight preset live
Which of the sixteen colour presets to use. The same number means a flat
colour in Normal mode and a two-colour ramp in Gradient mode, so the list
changes meaning with the mode above.
RangePreset 1–16DefaultPreset 1
Breathing light live
Slow brightness movement on the backlight. Smooth is a steady
swell, Heartbeat a double pulse.
ChoicesOff · Smooth · HeartbeatDefaultOff
Tube saver
Blanks the tubes overnight to spare them. The clock keeps running; only
the display goes dark.
ChoicesOn · OffDefaultOff
Start hour
When the tube saver blanks the display.
Range00:00–23:00Default01:00
End hour
When it lights them again.
Range00:00–23:00Default06:00
Motion sensor
Use the PIR sensor to light the tubes only when somebody is in the room.
Independent of the tube saver — both can blank the display.
ChoicesOn · OffDefaultOff
Motion on time
How long the tubes stay lit after the last movement.
Range1–10 minDefault5 min
Keypress beep
Short beep on every key press in the menus.
ChoicesOn · OffDefaultOn
Leading zero
Whether hours before ten are shown as 09 or as a blank tube and
a 9.
ChoicesOn · OffDefaultOn
Display what
What the tubes cycle through besides the time. The date appears at 20
seconds past the minute and the temperature at 40 seconds, each for ten
seconds before the time comes back.
ChoicesOnly time · Time & Calendar · Time and temp. · EverythingDefaultOnly time
Update speed
How often that cycle runs — every minute, or as rarely as every ten. Has
no effect while Display what is Only time.
Range1–10 minDefault1 min
Exit — save and return to the clock.
4 · Maintenance
opens with the bottom-right key
Diagnostics, the settings that protect the hardware, and per-digit trim.
The first five items are readings rather than settings. Leaving this menu
also saves the current trim table.
FW version reading
Firmware version and hardware revision. The version tune plays while you
are on this item, unless Welcome sounds is off.
Showsv2.10 Rev B
Sync status reading
Which time sources are answering right now — a source counts as live if a
good sentence has arrived in the last ten seconds. A right key here syncs
the clock immediately from whichever source is available, GPS first.
ShowsBoth on · GPS on, NTP off · GPS off, NTP on · No lock
Request NTP sync
Asks the Wi-Fi module for the time and waits for it. Press a right key to
start; press any key to give up. The tubes keep running throughout, so a
clock with no module fitted never looks frozen.
ShowsPress right key → Requesting… → OK hh:mm:ss, Timeout or Cancelled
WiFi status reading
Once connected this shows the clock's IP address — type it into a browser
on the same network to reach the settings page. During first-time setup it
alternates every 2.5 seconds between Setup portal and the
portal's own address, which is what you need if the captive portal does
not open by itself.
ShowsSetup portal · Connecting · AP not found · Conn. failed · Getting time · an IP address
Input voltage reading
The supply coming in at the barrel jack, measured before the regulator.
Reads No sense line on a board without the divider fitted.
Showse.g. 23.88 V
LCD contrast live
Contrast of this display. There is no trimmer on the board, so this is
the only adjustment. It changes as you press, in steps of five.
Range0–100 %Default65 %
Welcome sounds
The start-up tune at power-on and the version tune on the FW version
item. Turning it off silences a preview already playing.
ChoicesOn · OffDefaultOn
Min. brightness clock only
The dimmest the tubes are ever driven — where step 1 of Brightness lands.
Moves in tens, and is held at least 900 below the maximum.
Range100 to (max − 900)Default100
Max. brightness clock only
The brightest the tubes are ever driven — where step 8 lands. This is a
hardware limit, not a preference: too high will damage smaller tubes,
which is why neither limit can be changed from the web page.
Range(min + 900) to 3000Default1000
Select tube
Which tube the trim below applies to, numbered 1–6 from the left.
RangeTube 1–6
Select digit
Which cathode in that tube. 0–9 are the digits; 10 is the temperature
symbol, which only exists on tube 6.
RangeDigit 0–10
Adjust current live
Per-cathode brightness trim, for evening out a digit that sits brighter
or dimmer than its neighbours — usually a worn one. All six tubes show the
selected digit while you are on this item so you can compare them. Saved
when you leave the menu.
Range−100 to +1000Default+0
Set defaults
Factory reset. Hold both right keys together to confirm —
a single key does nothing. Every setting returns to its default and the
clock restarts.
ShowsPress both right

Bottom left
Tube test — the temperature symbol blinks three times, then each tube
shows its own index. Left to right it must read 0 1 2 3 4 5.

The web page
Address
Shown on WiFi status in menu 4. It carries every setting in
these menus except the two brightness limits, which stay on the clock.
Both at once
Whoever is at the buttons wins: while a menu is open the page refuses to
write and offers to close the menu for you. Opening the page also closes a
menu that was left open on the clock.
Generated from the firmware itself — the item names are the strings in
menu.c, the ranges are the ones settings_sanitize()
enforces, and the defaults are settings_defaults(). If a menu changes,
this page is wrong until it is regenerated.
