Six-tube nixie clock, mk.4

A six-tube nixie clock that sets itself. It can take the time from a GPS receiver or from the internet over Wi-Fi, applies your time zone and daylight saving rule, and re-syncs every hour. Everything can be adjusted from the four buttons and a small LCD, or from a settings page in any browser on your home network.

RGB LEDs under the tubes give sixteen colour presets, smooth gradients and a slow breathing effect. The tubes are looked after too: an hourly cathode refresh, an overnight tube saver, a motion sensor that lights the display only when someone is in the room, and a per-digit brightness trim for evening out worn digits.

16-segment text display module

An eight-character, 16-segment display that shows text straight from a serial port. Send it plain ASCII from a PC, Raspberry Pi or Arduino and it appears on the display, with no driver code needed. For full control of individual segments there is a raw mode, and a free Windows tool, CharGen, lets you click segments to design your own characters and copy the codes.

It runs from 2.5 to 5.5 V, so it works with 3.3 V and 5 V logic without level shifters. An optional clock version turns it into a stand-alone desk clock with alarm, calendar and thermometer, keeping time on a precision TCXO and a supercapacitor backup.

Six-tube nixie clock kit

A six-tube nixie clock powered over USB-C with USB Power Delivery. It grew out of the original four-tube Mighty clock and keeps its alarm, 12/24-hour mode, LCD screen and adjustable backlight. Sold as a kit, with a built-in check that helps you confirm every tube is soldered correctly. A laser-cut enclosure drawing and 3D-printable parts are included below.
